I wrote this song in May 2011 and was actually the second song I wrote for this E.P. The first being “Sentimental” but we’ll come to that later. I remember recording the original demo for it with my dear old friend David Leighton a few weeks after writing it, showing my manager Adam and his first words were “Yes! Those ‘Ah’s’ in the intro are so catchy”.
So the story behind this stems from a night of heavy drinking at my good friend (and great Singer-Songwriter) Ben Sydes’ house in St Neots.
There were certain things happening at that time and had me feeling like a ghost. The journey back home made matters worse.
Feeling like you don’t exist to someone, but still knowing that you’re all they think about is something I’m sure everyone has gone through and this is my interpretation of that.
Mainly, it’s about standing up to that person and just asking them “Well...what?”. It has had several lyric re-writes and name changes from “Taurus Tattoo” to “Red Dress” but I settled on “Oh, Little Red” after I came up with the vocal melody for the chorus.
It also used to be about another 2 and a half minutes longer but it just didn’t sound right. So a few weeks before we hit the studio, my Manger and I decided to cut it straight after the second chorus. It’s short, sweet, to the point and a great opener to the E.P.
The music video to it is beautiful. Directed and filmed by Jack Kiteley and Ryan Clarke who worked on the video for “Auburn”.
The lovely clean guitar section you hear in the chorus’ is performed by my manager Adam, and was written by accident when he was just jamming along to it in the studio.
My favourite lyric in this song is the opening line “You’ve got that look in your eyes, that says ‘something’s not right’ and I can feel it”. I definitely remember writing that and thinking ‘Ok, this is going to grab attention if that person ever hears this song’
