“Puppy Fat”, despite it’s title, isn’t about weight loss, or the old in-joke between friends and myself at a few shows that it’s about small overweight dogs/little fat dogs.
It is however about trying to shed off the years of your youth whilst still trying to hold onto what’s important. Lyrically, it’s aimed at a few people I have met over the last few years and how despite some memories seem like nightmares, I wouldn’t change a thing.
Again, like “Oh, Little Red”, it has undergone a couple of lyric changes here and there but the structure remains the same as from when I first wrote it back in November 2011. In fact, the first demo of this was recorded as a full band rock song ordeal, but I love how I managed to capture the same energy in this stripped back version.
My favourite lyric is in the middle 8 section “I would’ve stole the sun to keep you warm”. I won’t go into too much detail about what that’s about, but what I will say is that when ever I play this song, I always put the most emphasis on this line.
