Without giving away the whole story to this one, it’s about a close friend of mine and a girl he liked for a long time. I wrote it in around April/May time 2012 after I spoke to said friend about something that had happened between him and her.
I sing the song jumping between the first and third person perspective as playing the part of my friend, and then being myself telling the girl that she is breaking him.
Whilst recording it in the studio, there was a bit of a dispute between myself, manager and co-producer Lee about how it should sound as the way I played it on the E.P is slightly different to the original demo I did for this song. Basically on the demo, it was a bit more chilled out, where as the one you hear here is a bit more full on. It wasn’t a massive falling out or anything like that, but let’s just say in the end, the music spoke for its self and when the lyrics were recorded, it got my point across as to why I played it the way I had done! But that’s why I had those guys with me in the studio, to give their opinions into making this the best possible portrayal of myself.
My favourite lyric is in the last chorus “I’ve got just what I need but I can’t see the way around the ropes/reaching for my dream but I’ll never come close”. That’s about a feeling we all get where we feel a little intimidated by the fact that imagination and reality are always two very different things, and no amount of planning can prepare you for what’s in store.
