about

What you’re about to listen to are 5 stories written in the space of about 14 months from May 2011 to July 2012.

If you’re expecting to hear the "next Frank Turner” as I was dubbed a lot upon the release of my previous E.P “Do You Remember?”, then you may be slightly surprised this time around.

The title “Forever, Instead” actually comes from a song I released for free back in April 2012 titled 'Turning 21'. In some way’s the title pays tribute to “For Emma, Forever Ago” by Justin Vernon’s brainchild “Bon Iver”.

The story behind the title however is as follows…
I have a real problem with the term 'forever'. What does 'forever' really mean? It’s a word that get’s thrown around daily by people, whether they’re trying to describe a distance, or a time limit, or If they’re trying to make future plans with a loved one.Yes, we all make plans etc, but I think there comes a point when a person looks at their life, evaluates it and thinks “What’s the point? I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, so why am I trying to look so far ahead down the line?".

I’ve had several conversations with someone over the past few years, and they couldn’t bare the thought of me not wanting to look into the future and of course that's not a bad thing. When you're with someone it's natural to start looking forwards to those things, but unfortunately, I couldn't see my self doing those things as I plan to do this for the for-seeable future. So the title is about me giving and saying that if I can’t live in the moment, I’ll settle for - "Forever, Instead”.

After a few weeks of assessing our time together, we called it a day in Winter of 2012 after just over 3 years of being in each others lives, but I'd like to dedicate this E.P to her as it is and always was for Sophie, as she came to my first ever official show as Dropout Dan on April 8th 2009, and listened to versions of these songs in demo form and as live performances, and did her best to show enthusiasm for my crazy life style choice. I can't thank her enough.

That being said, this is NOT solely a break up record (as in fact none of these songs have been written since said break up). Yes it briefly touches on heartbreak, but that comes in many forms these days. It’s about everything that we all go through in life - growth, regret, memories, love, lust and the realisation that none of us are going to be around forever...
