This one’s an interesting one. It was the first song I wrote for this E.P and there is a video of me online playing it for the very first time live in Oxford at Port Mahon. The version you hear on this E.P is almost exactly the same to the version I wrote in about 10 minutes in the first week of May 2011, apart from a few small lyric changes and neatening up of the melodies and message that I wanted to get across.
The original middle 8 used to have me swearing (like the punk-rocker I am...) but I decided to take it out a week before going into record it as I didn’t want it to be “That song with the swearing in it”. As much as I love the old lyrics, I thought that I could portray the same image in a better way.
The main concept about this song is simple… boy goes out, boy meets girl, boy and girl drink lots, they end up in bed together, boy does a runner, but not before he leaves a note by her bedside (the note being the lyrics in the last chorus of this song)
But the hidden story behind the lyrics is about confusing lust for love and the thin line that separates the two. It’s not really written about anyone in particular, but I’ve drawn on a couple of personal experiences I’ve had or my friends have had. The scratchy sound that you hear in the instrumental section of the song is me actually writing out the lyrics to the last chorus with a pencil on a pad of paper as I wanted to rip off Eminem’s “Stan” and the effect he had through the song of actually writing.
My favourite lyric is in the middle 8, “Oh I know there are ways around this coming from moving forwards with the lights turned off”. It’s about trying to fight certain urges but not being strong enough and giving in.
