"The amount of times i've written a song and put the lyrics 'I love you' in have either been scrapped or had those lyrics changed. But seeing as this song is all about letting yourself be seen for what you truly are, I thought 'Yeah ok, what a great way to finish a song by saying something truly honest?!'
The story behind this song is after the demise of 'That' relationship, I ended up meeting and falling for the girl that I'm proud to still call my girlfriend. It's been on and off though for the last 2 and a half years and we've both said and done things that we both regret, and wish we could change. But we can't. So this song was my way of saying to her 'I don't care anymore about all the nonsense we put ourselves through. I'm still the same person that you met, and you're still the one that I want and need'
The title 'Watermarks' has two meaning.
1. The obvious meaning for the tracks that tears leave behind on you face.
2. On £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes, when you hold them up to the light, you can see the hidden 'Water Mark'
I thought using this as the title was excellent as it's all about putting yourself out there and showing who you really are to someone that you've hurt before and how none of it really matters as long as you know that if the feeling that you feel is 100% true, then it deserves a second chance, as many times as it takes to get it right.
So this one is for Sophie.
lyrics
Verse: Take me down off of this stage. 'cause i'm not feeling to brave. I can't stand the eyes all on me. Revealing what they shouldn't see. Stripped down torn at the seams. And although these watermarks run streams. They could set us free.
Verse: At times I can be quite a bit. Ignorant, yeah i'll admit. And although we don't see eye to eye. Turn off the music and turn down the lights. 'cause we can see much better with our eyes closed. In the end we are all just skin and bone. I am your own.
Middle 8: So tear down the curtains to see if i'm there, I see you. Hold me up to the light and you will see straight though. Yeah i'm not ready to say my last adieu. And I won't let this go until the day that you forget that we're the best on view.
Verse: Take me from out of this page. 'cause i'm feeling twice my age. Let's cast all our past aside. And do our best to pull in the tide. And take our reunion to heart. It's been this way from the start. I love you.
